Who Says Slow Loris is Just a Slow Loris?

For the past two years, there have been a lot of people coming in and coming out. Each has different background, culture, nationalities, and characters. I feel lucky to have ever met and worked with those people. These past two years as well, I also encountered a lot of wild slowlorises coming in and coming out, born and died. They are more than their name “slow loris”. They have characters and stories. So, through this last blog that I write, I want to write up about some short stories of slow loris families in Cipaganti.

Lucu’s Family

Lucu, meaning funny, was the love of Dempak’s life. She knew that being depressed for his death won’t be good for her health, so she moved on and lives with Rufio now, together with her children, Lupak (from Lucu & Dempak) and Lalit. They live in a better area than any others as the connectivity there is quite dense. Lucu uses this for her advantages, so she could travel and explore a lot.

Lucu

– Dempak. The late Dempak was my first loris I observed back in 2016, I remembered he was so lazy for just staying in the same tree for my whole first shift, leaving me, Laura, and Rahmat freezing as we didn’t move a lot either. I was expecting them to be active, but phew…. he almost gave me an impression that slow loris had monotonous routinity, which is actually not at all. Unfortunately he died in 2017. Also he was called Dempak, meaning flat nose, as he had a flat nose and a flat face lol.

– Lupak. The name comes from Lucu and Dempak. She is a good sister to Lalit. Recent Lupak observation that I did took place farther than her normal homerange, I guess she start to want to live independently.

– Lalit. A little brother to Lupak. I didn’t observe her that often, but when I did, he was grooming and playing with Lupak.

Maya’s Family

I felt really bad for her family as it fell apart. She had the title as slow loris whose collar lost most often. Maya used to live with Fernando. Maya has gone AWOL now. She lost her collar, a lot of effort had been put to find her, but no result. She used to live with Fernando (which apparently he turns to be a bit of an *ss, having affairs with Tereh and Shirley now), Mungkin, Mikio, and Maaf. Each sons have unique names.

Maya

– Fernando. The fiercest and naughty loris is seeing Tereh and Shirley now. He always shows his aggresion when captured, therefore becoming Adin’s (the head of capture team) frenemy.

– Mungkin. Oh he was one of my best lorises. Every time I observed him, he always displayed cool behaviours with her mother. He had a unique name which literally means “maybe”, so when I asked the trackers if “maybe” is on the tree, they answered “maybe”. I was sad when I heard the news that he died during dispersal.

– Mikio. Another lazy loris. He loved to stay in the same tree the whole shift, but he lived in a very good connected area, so he could be really hideous. Unfortunately, he also died during windy season. He was mistaken as Fernando when the real Fernando lost his collar. Unlike his father, he was really calm the first time they captured him. Giving doubts to trackers for his not-so Fernando trait, they gave him a temporary name as KW (KW means something not original, fake, imitated) prior to Mikio.

– Maaf. A timid loris. The last-man standing from Maya’s lineage. During dispersal, I saw him running away from another loris approaching him. Even he is a timid one, he still can survive and thrive.

Tereh’s Family

Tereh means “fast”. Yup, the word slow in the slow loris doesn’t mean anything for her. She can run really fast that sometimes we have to run back and forth to chase her. She used to be the soulmate of Alomah, and gave birth to the young healthy Tombol, Tzatziki, and Tyrion.

– Alomah. My one of best lorises as well. He was a great father who took care of his children with full of love and taught them to live in the wild. He was a calm loris for not being so aggressive when he was captured for a collar replacement.

– Tombol. A loving daughter and the #1 big sista. She really loved her family that she dispersed later than usual lorises. She loved to play with her father and little brothers. Although now she has dispersed farther, hopefully lives a good life out there.

– Tzatziki. What a brave and persistent young loris. He had ever bit one of the trackers when they captured him. He starts to disperse really early at his age. Full of courage, he explored an area really far from her mother.

Tzatziki

– Tyrion. Tyriooon, a young collared that was just collared. I didn’t see him that often, so I don’t really know him. But, with a face resembling Tyrion (GoT), I bet his characteristic is not any different from him, a good strategist for his survival

Shirley’s Family

A beautiful lady and mother of Sampoerna (meaning “perfect”) and Star. This family lives in a good area with a lot of tree connection and bamboos, making them easier to travel and hard to observe. This family like to do their nightly activities inside the bamboo patch.

Shirley

Toyib

Most of volunteers and trackers would say no to this loris if they have option to choose. He lives in the furthest area and sometimes go to forest. I guess he is the most mischievous loris as he likes to make it hard for the team. He has a strong desire to survive as he was sick, the team took care of them, and could be perfectly healthy again and met Daenerys. Whatever they are doing in the forest, I hope they live a happy life.

One Eye’s Family

The literally one-eyed slow loris and the mother of Alomah and probably newly captured Embe. She is truly a survivor. Kaliandra forest in her area provides her with good amount of food and the bamboo patches provide her a safe place to live. Sometimes, she is seen not active and stays in bamboo for a long time. Sometimes, she can make us cross the river back and forth.

There are still other collared slow lorises in Cipaganti that I have met but never got the chance to observe. I feel lucky to have ever seen them in the wild. And they are so lucky to be able stay in the wild and being wild. I will forever miss LFP, the team, and the slow lorises and wish them all happy life. ABDULLAH LANGGENG
